I had wanted to read this book for a while but wasn’t in the mood to read it… (life of a mood reader lol). But when I finally just told myself to pick it up and read, I kicked myself for waiting so long! Now, this is my first romantasy, so I can’t really compare it to other books. But I liked the way Devney had done world building. She explains everything in detail that you can literally imagine and draw a picture in your mind of the people, places, and “monsters.’ I do feel as if maybe in some spots in the story, descriptions were a little much for the situation and distracted me from the rest of the scene.

That aside, I really like the characters! Brielle does get on my nerves some and honestly Odessa should’ve sent her back to Quentis when she sent Jocelyn back. I get that when you’re not used to living in that type of environment, it is a hard adjustment but come on girl. Just let her go back because she’s not really useful anymore, since Odessa can take care of herself and doesn’t really mention Brielle after a few situations in Treow happened. Don’t let a girl that you don’t “need” anymore to hang around and be miserable. That’s Odessa’s fault.

Odessa I like, but she also has her moments where she thinks she is trained enough and knows enough to “handle herself” when monsters are attacking. No she doesn’t. Constantly needing to be saved by the guardian and thus putting him in even more danger. But when she isn’t acting like that, she is an enjoyable character. Willing to do whatever she needs to make sure Evie is safe and protected. Any child for that matter as we saw when she almost became Tarkin food lol. And wanting to help find answers to some of the happenings in Turah. Feeling as if she finally found a home worth fighting for, and giving it her all to have it stay.

The guardian I LOVE!! Nothing bad to really say about him lol. Except for lying to Odessa as long as he did. That I didn’t care for. He’s just trying to strive and survive. Protecting his people while trying to figure out what the hell’s going on in Turah. He loves Odessa with everything he’s got and you can really feel that love when they are in Allesaria and the Bariwolves attack. Your heart almost wants to stop because his feels like it could during that scene.

I adore that the people of Turah (for the most part) have each other's back, and will do whatever they can to help out and make sure they protect as many people as possible. Even if it costs them their lives. Turah may have its problems and its roughness, but it’s the more truthful and honest kingdoms.

With all of this ramble to say, I really did enjoy this book and soon I’ll be jumping into book 2! Though, I did hear it does end on a cliffhanger… I don’t do well with those… so maybe I’ll wait until book 3 comes out so i’m not such a nervous wreck lmao.
