This book was a great introduction for this series! It had just the right amount of suspense and world building to keep me interested in the entire book and eager to read the next in the series… which is Elle’s book!! (I’m so excited about this one) and to meet most of them already is something I also enjoyed a lot. But before I dive into my review, I may as well give a BRIEF blurb of the book.
This book follows Jace, who is a detective that gets reassigned to Timber Creek for a few months as a “mandatory vacation” of sorts. And Camille, who is the chief's daughter, owns a b&b, and the “odd girl” of town since she can see and hear the whispers of Timber Creek. AKA has a sixth sense. While Jace is bidding his time in what he calls the boonies, a woman goes missing and instead of working the case, he gets put on babysitting duty. And that’s because Camille has a habit of umm doing things her own way while voluntarily helping solve the case.
So on with the review… For starters, I love that pretty much everyone in the station is one huge family. Some of them are actually.. But still. You know what I mean. And when one is in need of help or rescuing, they are there no matter what. Except for Dustin. The group may just let that one be lol. Anyways..
When you first meet Jace, he’s going through some stuff and feels like working will make him move on from what happened. But what really helps him move on is Camille. At first he was kinda douchey towards her and calling her nuts like everyone else in town does. But once he gets stuck with her on and off the clock, his judgement
towards her fades and is replaced by loveeeee. That anything to do with Camille, he is there front and center to make sure his girl is ok.
And when you meet Camille, she’s busy with her b&b and trying to avoid the staring eyes of the townspeople. When in walks mr douchebag. Crabby pants mcgee that “dislikes” her more than anyone. Or so she thinks. Somewhat right off the bat she knows there’s more that meets the eye, and is wanting to know the real Jace. Not the front he puts on for everyone else.
Camille is someone I admire for her strength through everything. From hushed whispers, awful visions of the victims, to being treated like she’s a flight risk by her dad. She still stands tall and does it with a beautiful smile. Knowing that even if she’s the only one with this gift, she wants to use it to save people no matter what that looks like to others. Just don’t die girl. Jace would killlll youuuuuu. So would Elle. And I mean dead dead.
When it was revealed who the killer was, I knew it!! From the moment the character was introduced, something wasn’t right.
Overall, I really enjoyed this story and can’t wait to continue on with the rest of the series. I’m not only curious about Elle and Easton, but also Tilly and Greyson.
Rex is probably my favorite side piece. I mean side character.
